Patna : Bangladesh (BAN) defeated WTC titleholder New Zealand (NZ) by 8 wickets in 1st test at Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui, NZ, on the last day of the match on January 5, 2022, to register a historic victory over the host. Bangladesh had never defeated the NZ in any format in NZ in nine previous attempts. It was also their first win ever against NZ. BAN medium fast bowler Ebadot Hossain was named Player Of The Match for taking 6/46 in 21 overs in NZ second innings. He had also taken one wicket in first innings. BAN now lead the two-match test series 1-0. They got 12 WTC posts for their victory.

Resuming at their overnight score of 147/5, NZ were bundled out for just 169 runs in 73.4 overs in their second innings with opener Will Young scoring 69 in 172 balls with 7 fours and Ross Taylor scoring 40 in 104 balls with 2 fours. Both fell to Ebadot Hossain. Captain Tom Latham (opener) was bowled by fast medium bowler Taskin Ahmed for 14. Devon Conway, who had scored 122 runs in first innings, fell to Ebadot Hossain for 13 runs in second innings. Ebadot took 6/46. NZ had scored 328 runs in their first innings while BAN had scored 458 runs in their first innings.

Set a target of 40 runs, BAN scored 42/2 in 16.5 overs to register a historic win over the hosts. Opener Shadman Isman and Najmal Hossain Shanto scored 3 and 17 runs respectively. Shadman fell to fast medium bowler Tim Southee while Shanto fell to fast bowler Kyle Jamieson. Captain Mominul Haq remained unbbeaten on 13 runs while Mushfiqur Rahim remained 5 not out.
