Patna : England were 220/2 in 70 overs at stumps on Day 3 in their 2nd innings in 1st test against Australia at The Gabba, Brisbane, Australia, on December 10, 2021, as captain Joe Root and Dawid Malan added 159 runs in their unbroken partnership for the 3rd wicket. Root was unbeaten on 86 runs in 158 balls with 10 fours while Malan was batting on 80 in 177 balls with 10 fours. Root has never made a test century in Australia but is closer to achieving the feat in this test.

England did not start well though losing their first wicket that of opener Rory Burns with only 23 runs on board. Burns fell to fast bowler Pat Cummins ( captain) for 13 runs. His opening partner Haseeb Hameed fell to fast bowler Mitchell Starc for 27 runs making it 61/2.England, who had scored only 147 runs in their first innings, are still trailing by 58 runs.

Earlier resuming at their overnight score of 343/7, Australia were all out for 425 runs in 104.3 overs as Travis Head and Mitcchell (35) added 85 runs for the 8th wicket. Starc fell to fast bowler Chris Woakes. Spinner Nathan Lyon fell to fast bowler Mark Wood for 15. Travis Head was the last Australian batter to get out. Travis Head was bowled by Mark Wood for 152 runs hitting 14 fours and 4 sixes.

For England, Mark Wood and Ollie Robinson took three wickets each while Chris Woakes took two wickets. Jack Leach and Joe Root took 1 wicket each.
