Patna : Electing to bat after winning the toss, India were 258/4 after 84 overs at stumps on Day 1 in the 1st test against New Zealand (NZ) at Green Park, Kanpur, UP, on November 25, 2021, as debutant Shreyas Iyer and Ravindra Jadeja added 113 runs in 208 balls in their unbroken partnership for the 5th wicket. Iyer was unbeaten 75 runs in 136 balls with 7 fours and 2 sixes while Jadeja was 50 not out in 100 balls hitting 6 fours.

Opener Mayank Agarwal fell to fast bowler Kyle Jamieson for 13 runs. His opening partner Shubman Gill also fell to Jamieson for 52  while Cheteswar Pujara fell to fast medium bowler Tim Southee for 26 runs with 2 fours. Ajinkya Rahane ( captain ) fell to Jamieson for 35 runs with 6 fours. Gill and Pujara added 61 runs for 2nd wicket. For NZ,Jamieson took 3/47.
