Patna : India reached semi-finals in Women’s Hockey at Tokyo Olympics on August 2, 2021, defeating three-time champion Australia 1-0 in quarter-final. Defender Gurjit Kaur,25, scored the winning goal for India in the quarter-final sending India into semi-finals creating history, their first Olympics SFs.. Australis had won Gold Medal in women’s Hockey at 1988 Seoul, 1996 Atlanta, and 2000 Sydney Olympics.

The Indian women’s Hockey team, which had conceded 14 goals at Tokyo Olympics in 5 matches, maintained pressure on two-time former World Champion Australia throughout the match with 59 % possession of the ball in their QF match. India had finished 4th in Pool A while Australia had topped Pool B.

India will clash with Argentina, a two-time silver medallist at Olympics ( 2000 Sydney and 2012 London)  in semi-finals on August 3, 2021. It will be India’s first semi-finals appearance in Women;s Hockey at Olympics. Argentina defeated Germany 3-0 in quarter-finals on the day.

India’s Men’s Hockey team reached SFs on August 1, 2021.
