Patna : World No 1 & top seed Novak Djokovic, 34, Serbia, edged past World No 5 Stefanos Tsitsipas, 22, Greece, in a five-set marathon in men’s singles final on court Philippe-Chatrier, Stade Roland Garros, Paris, France, to win his 2nd French Open title on June 13, 2021, late night.
With it, Djokovic became the first player in the OPen era to win all the four majors :- Wimbledon, US Open, Australian Open, and FRench Oeen, at least twice. It is Djokovic’s 19th Grand Slam singles title, just one behind Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.
Djokovic battled pst Tsitsipas 6-7, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 in final roaring back from two-sets down. The 3rd game in third set turned out to be game changer. Djokovic broke Tsitsipas’ serve in 3rd game of 3rd set to take 2-1 lead and then never looked back.
The Serbian, who had defeated 13-time champion & 3rd seed Rafael Nadal, Spain, in semi-finals, won 5 break points during the match to 3 by the Greek. He also won 5 games in a row in the match to 4 by Tsitsipas. The Serbian, in all, won 164 points during the match to 147 by the Greek. Tsitsipas, however, hammered 14 Aces in the match to 5 by Djokovic. Tsitsipas though also committed 4 double faults in the match to 3 by Djokovic.
