Patna : Fifth seed Alexander Zverev, 24, Germany, battled past 8th seed Matteo Berrettini, 25, Italy, in three-sets in final to win the Mutua Madrid Open, an ATP Masters 1,000 points tournament, at Madrid, Spain, on May 9, 2021, late night, his 2nd Madrid Open title.
Zverev defeated Berrettini 6-7, 6-4, 6-3 in 2hr 41 minutes in final rallying back from one set down to win his 4th ATP Masters 1,000 title. Zverev won 4 break points during the match to just 1 by the Italian. Both the players won 3 games each in a row during the match. The Italian though fired 7 Aces during the match to 5 by Zverev. The German, in all, won 107 points in the match to 98 by Berrettini. Zverev also committed 7 double faults to just 1 by Berrettini.
Zverev had stunned top seed & winner of 20 Grand Slam singles titles Rafael Nadal, 34, Spain, in quarter-finals, and reigning US Open Champion & 3rd seed Dominic Thiem, 27, Austria, in semi-finals.
