Patna : Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) defeated Mumbai Indians (MI)  by two wickets in the first match of IPL 2021 at M A Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, Tamilnadu, on April 9, 2021, night, with A B de Villiers (wk) scoring 48 in 27 balls with 4 fours and 2 sixes and fast medium bowler Harshal Mehta taking 5 MI wickets including 3 in last over conceding just 27 runs. Harshal Patel, incidentally, also scored the winning run on the last ball of the 20th over. RCB had won the toss and opted to bowl.

Batting first, MI scored 159/9 in 20 overs with opener Chris Lynn scoring 49 runs with 4 fours and 3 sixes.  In reply, RCB scored 160/8 in 20 overs. All-rounder Glenn Maxwell scored 39 in 28 balls hitting 3 fours and 2 sixes while captain Virat Kohli scored 33 in 29 balls with 4 fours. There was some excitement in the last over as A B de Villers was run out while attempting a non-existent second run.

For MI, fast bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Marco Jansen took wickets each while Krunal Pandya and Trent Boult took 1 wicket each.
