Patna : India defeated England by 36 runs in the 5th T20I at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, Gujarat, on March 20, 2021, night, to win the five-match series 3-2 with pacer Shardul Thakur again turning out to be the game changer taking the wickets of Jonny Bairstow and Dawid Malan in his 3rd over, the 15th of the innings. Shardul Thakur took 3/45 in 4 overs. He had also taken two wickets ( Ben Stokes and Eoin Morgan) in one over in the 4th T20I. Incidentally, Thakur leaked 20 runs including 3 sixes in the last over . He, however, also took the wicket of Chris Jordan in the same over.
Chasing a target of 225 runs, England could score only 188 runs in 20 overs with Dawid Malan scoring 68 runs in 46 balls with 9 fours and 2 sixes and opener Jos Buttler (wk) scoring 52 in 34 balls hitting 2 fours and 4 sixes. England opener Jason Roy fell to Bhuvneshwar Prasad for zero making it 0/1.England were, however, cruising along at 130/1 but collapsed thereafter as Jos Buttler fell to Bhuvneshwar Prasad for 52 making it 130/2 after 12.5 overs. Jonny Bairstow fell to Shardul Thakur for 7 and it was 140/3 after 14.3 overs. Dawid Malan also fell to Thakur for 68 and it was 142/4 after 15 overs.
Captain Eoin Morgan fell to Hardil Pandya for 1 making it 142/5. All-rounder Ben Stokes fell to T Natarajan for 14 and it was 165/6 after 18.3 overs. Jofra Archer was run out for 1 making it 168/7. Chris Jordan fell to Thakur for 11 and it 174/8. Sam Curran remained unbeaten on 14 in 3 balls hitting 2 sixes of Thakur. Buttler and Malan added 130 runs for the 2nd wicket. India had scored 224/2 in 20 overs.
