Saharsa : The Mukhia of Diwari Panchayat Yogendra Thakur, a native of village Bharauli West Tola under Kahra Block in Saharsa District in North Bihar, was allegedly attacked by his close relatives with iron rods and sticks injuring him seriously on March 17, 2021, late night, in an incident of violence related to coming Gram Panchayat elections.

The villagers rushed Yogendra Thakurrushed to a hospital where he is under treatment. When his son Shankar Thakur lodged a complaint with Sonbarsa Kutchery police outpost in this connection, he too was assaulted by his relatives after he returned to his village. Shankar was injured in the attack. Police rushed to the place of occurrence and brought the situation under control.

Yogendra Thakur, a barber by profession, is quite popular among the people of his panchayat. He was allegedly attacked by his nephews after he refused to obey their dictate of not contesting the panchayat poll this year. Yogendra Thakr alleged  that his nephews including Pankaj Thakur, Krishna Kumar, Ankaj Thakur, and their entire family had been putting pressure on him not to contest the polls this time. The matter event went to the Panchayat 15 days back where the villagers urged Yogendra Thakur to contest the panchayat polls again and asked Pankaj Thakur not to contest the polls. At this, Yogendra Thakur alleged, Pankaj Thakur demanded a big amount from him which he refused to pay. This intensified the dispute between the two sides leading to attack on him on March 17, 2021, late night, he alleged.

Yogendra  Thakur had won the Mukhia election by a big margin in 2016 poll but had continued with his professional work visiting every house in this connection besides working hard for the development of the panchayat.

DSP (HQs), Saharsa, Brinandan Mehta, said that police were waiting for the statement of injured Yogendra Thakur. Once his statement is recorded, the accused would be arrested, DSP Mehta said.
