Patna : Tarkishore Prasad, 64, a four-term MLA from Katihar Assembly Constituency (AC) in Katihar District in east Bihar, was on November 15, 2020, elected as the BJP Legislature Party (BJPLP) leader while four-term MLA from Bettiah Renu Devi was elected as the Deputy Leader of BJPLP.

The election of Prasad as BJPLP leader was announced by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. Prasad has also been elected Deputy Leader of NDA. Former Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis also congratulated Prasad on his election as BJPLP leader and Deputy Ledaer of NDA.

Prasad’s election as BJPLP leader is major setback to senior BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi (SuMo) as the the party had won 74 of the 110 seats it had contested in the recently concluded Bihar Assembly elections. It definitely indicates SuMo’s dwindling clout in the party. He held the post of deputy Chief Minister for 12 years. BJP leadership was apparently not happy with the handling of the LJP by SuMo before the  polls. Prasad, a businessman, is 12th Pass.

Prasad had first won Katihar seat in October 2005 Assembly polls and then retained his seats in 2010, 2015, and 2020 polls. Prasad had defeated RJD candidate and former Minister Ram Prakash Mahto in 2020 polls.  SuMo congratulated Prasad and Renu Devi on their election as BJPLP leader and Deputy Leader respectively. He said that the BJP and Sangh Pariwar had given him a lot during last 40 years of his political career. Nibody can take away the post of party worker from him, SuMo said. ” I shall carry out whatever responsibility is given to me by the party in future,” SuMo said in a tweet.
