Patna : Top Seed Simona Halep, 28, Romania, and 9th seed Garbine MUguruza, 26, Spain, both former French Open and Wimbledon women’s champion, will clash in the Italian Open 2020 semi-finals on September 20, 2020, at Foro Italico, Rome, Italy.
Simona Halep, who won French Open singles title in 2018 and Wimbledon title in 2019, beat Yulia Putintseva, 25, Kazakhstan, 6-2, in quarter-finals on September 19, 2020. Putintseva retired due to back injury in second set trailing 0-2.
Muguruza, who won French Open title in 2016 and Wimbledon title in 2017, beat US Open 2020 finalist Victoria Azarenka, 31, Belarus, in a three-set thriller 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in QFs rallying back from one set down. Muguruza won 7 break points in the match to 6 by Azarenka. Both the players won 3 games each in a row. The Spainiard won 93 points in the match to 88 by Azarenka, winner of two Grand Slam singles titles
12th Seed Marketa Vondrousova, 21, Czech Republic, stunned 4th seed Elina Svitolina, 26, Ukraine, 6-3, 6-0 in QFs winning 4 break points to march into semi-finals. Vondrousova won 6 games in a row to 4 by Svitolina. She won 69 points to 45 by Svitolina.
