Patna : Spain defeated Japan 3-0 at Perth, Australia, in a Group B match in 24-nation inaugural ATP Cup on January 8, 2020. In another Group B match Georgia beat Uruguay 2-1. In a Group A match at Brisbane, Australia, Serbia beat Chile 2-1while Russia beat France  2-1.

World No 1 Rafael Nadal, Spain, beat World No 72 Yoshohito Nishioka, Japan, 7-6, 6- in 128 minutes in a tough contest recovering twice from a break down in the first set. Earlier, World No 10 Roberto Bautista Agut, Spain, beat World No 119 Go Soeda, 35, Japan, 6-2, 6-4 in the first singles. Rafael Nadal & Pablo Carreno Busta, Spain, beat Ben McLachlan & Go Soeda, Japan, 7-6, 4-6, 10-6 in the doubles in 115 minutes to make it 3-0. With this win, Spain entered the quarter-finals of the tournament.

World No 2 Novak Djokovic, Serbia, beat World No 33 Cristian Garin,23,  Chile, 6-3, 6-3 recovering from a break down in second set to take his team into the QFs of the event. Earlier, World No 34 Dusan Lajovic, Serbia, beat World No 77 Nicolas Jarry, 24, Chile, 6-2, 7-6 in the first match. Chile won the double match.
