Patna : England defeated South Africa (SA) by 189 runs in the 2nd test at Newlands, Capte Town, South Africa, in the third session of play on Day 5 on January 7, 2020, with all-rounder Ben Stokes, who had scored 72 in 47 balls hitting 7 fours and 3 sixes in England second innings, took 3/35 in 23.4 overs while James Anderson took 2/23 and spinner Joe Denly 2/42. England have levelled the four-match series 1-1. Ben Stokes was declared Player of the Match.
Chasing a target of 438, SA were all out for 248 in 137.4 overs in their second innings with opener Pieter Malan scoring 84 in 288 balls hitting only 3 fours while Quinton de Kock scored 50 in 107 balls 3 hitting 7 fours. Opener Dean Elgar scored 34 while Captain Faf du Plessis fell to spinner Dom Bess for 19.
Rassie van der Dussen scored 17 in 140 balls. Dussen and de Kock added 66 runs for the 6th wicket. Dussen and de Kock added 50 in 162 balls. Both fell at the same score making it 237/7. South Africa had scored 223 in their first innings.
England had scored 269 in their 1st innings and declared their 2nd innings at 391/8 with opener Dominic Sibley scoring an unbeaten 133 in 311 balls hitting 19 fours and six.
