Patna : A disastrous batting performance saw New Zealand (NZ) getting shot out for a paltry 148 in 54.5 overs in their first innings in 2nd test against Australia at Melbourne Cricket Ground, Melbourne, Australia, on Day 3 on December 28, 2019, handing over a 319 run lead to the hosts. Australia had won the 1st Test by a huge margin.

Fast bowler Pat Cummins took 5/28 in 17 overs while fellow fast bowler James Pattinson took 3/34 in 15 overs. Fast bowler Mitchell Starc took 2/ 30 in 12.5 overs. NZ opener Tom Latham scored 50 in 144 balls with 4 fours as Australia continued its domination over the visitors. Australia had scored 467 in their first innings.

Australia, however, did not enforce the follow on and were 110/4 in 35 overs in their second innings. Opener David Warner fell to fast medium Neil Wagner for 38 in 65 balls with 3 fours while Marnus Labuschagne was run out for 19. Opener Joe Burns fell to spinner Mitchell Santner for 35 in 100 balls with 2 fours and a six making it 110/3  Steven Smith fell to Neil Wagner for 7 and it was 110/4 in the third session of play on Day 3. Matthew Wade and Travis Head are on the crease.

Earlier, NZ collapsed again to be all out for just 148 with  captain Kane Williamson scoring 9, Ross Taylor scoring 4, and B J Watling (wk) scoring 7, Henry Nicholls fell to Pat Cummins for a duck while Colin de Grandhomme fell to Mitchell Starc for 11. Pat Cummins took the wickets of opener : Tom Latham and Tom Blundell, Ross Taylor, Henry Nicholls, and Tim Southee. James Pattinson took the wickets of Kane Williamson, B J Watling, and Mitchell Santner (3). Starc took the wickets of Colin de Grandhomme (11) and Trent Boult (8).
