Patna : Winner of three Grand Slam singles titles and World No 18 Stan Wawrinka, 34, Switzerland, edged past World No 62 Feliciano Lopez, 38, Spain, in a three-set thriller in second round to enter the quarter-finals of  European Open, an ATP World Tour 250 points event, at Antwerp, Belgium.

Fourth seed Wawrinka beat Lopez 6-7, 6-4, 7-6 in 2hr 19 minutes in second round. Wawrinka hammered 17 ces in the match to 18 by Lopez. The Spaniard committed 4 double faults to 2 by the Swiss, who won a break point. Both the players won 2 games each in a row in the match. Wawrinka won 83 service points in the match to 80 by Lopez.

World No 47 Gilles Simon, 34, France, and World No 20 Guido Pella, 29, Argentina, also entered the QFs of the event on October 16, 2019, evening.

Simon upset World No 36 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, 34, France, in straight sets 6-4, 7-5 in second round even as Tsonga fired 8 Aces in the match. Simon won 3 break points innthe match to 1 by Tsonga. He won 3 games in a row in the match to 2 by Tsonga. Simon won 45 service points to 41 by Tsonga, a former Australian Open finalist. Simon will face Wawrinka in QFs.

Fifth seed Pella beat World No 88 Kwon Soon-woo, 21, South Korea,  in straight sets 7-5, 7-5 in second round in 1hr 54 minutes firing 12 Aces in the match. Pella also won 2 break points in the match besides winning 3 games in a row.
