Patna : World No 5 P V Sindhu, 24, India, created history by clinching the women’s singles title at BWF World Championships at Basel, Switzerland,  demolishing 2017 World Champion and World No 4 Nozomi Okuhara, 24, Japan, in the final on August 25, 2019, evening. She is the first Indian to win BWF World Championships title and Gold Medal.

Sindhu crushed Okuhara 21-7, 21-7 in 38 minutes in the final at StJakobshalle, Basel, Switzerland. Sindhu was playing was playing in her third successive World Championship and it was third time lucky for her. She had lost to Okuhara in 2017 final. Sindhu won 42 rallies in the match to just 14 by Okuhara. She won 8 consecutive points in the match to 2 by the Japanese. Sindhu now leads Okuhara 9-7 Head to Head.
