Serena beats Osaka to reach SFs of Rogers Cup, Bianca, Sofia, Marie also reach SFs

Patna : World No 10 and winner of 23 Grand Slam singles titles Serena Williams, 37, USA, and World No 27 Bianca Andreescu, 19, Canada, entered the semi-finals of Rogers Cup at Toronto, Canada, on August 10, 2019, early morning. World No 29 Sofia Kenin, 20, USA, also advanced to the semi-finals on August 9, 2019, late night.

Williams, the 8th seed, upset World No 2 Naomi Osaka, 21, Japan, 6-3, 6-4 in the quarter-finals to take revenge of her 2018 US Open final defeat at the hands of the Japanese. Serena fired 12 Aces in the match to none by the reigning US Open and Australian Open Champion Osaka. Serena also won 2 break points in the match. Serena won 43 service points to 32 by Osaka.

Bianca stunned World No 3 Karolina Pliskova, 27, Czech Republic, in three sets 6-0, 2-6, 6-4 in 1 hr 49 minutes in the quarter-finals. Bianca won 5 break points in the match to 3 by Pliskova. She won 6 games in a row in the match to 5 by third seed Pliskova. The Canadian won 47 service points to 42 by Pliskova.

World No 91 Marie Bouzkova, 21, Czech Republic, also entered the semi-finals after her quarter-finals opponent and World No 4 Simona Halep, Romania, the reigning Wimbledon Champion, retired due to injury after losing the first set 4-6.Bouzkova will face Serena in the SFs on August 11.

World No 29 Sofia Kenin, 20, USA, also advanced to the semi-finals on August 9, 2019, late night, defeating World N0 7 Elina Svitolina, 24, Ukraine, 7-6, 6-4 in the QFs. Kenin won 3 break points in the match to 2 by Svitolina. Svitolina though fired 6 Aces in the match to just 1 by Kenin. Kenin will face Bianca in the SFs on August 10, 2019, at 10.30 pm.
