Patna : Australia crushed England by 251 runs in the first Ashes Test at Edgbaston, Birmingham, UK, in the second session of the play on Day 5 on with spinner Nathan Lyon taking 6/49 in 20 overs and fast bowler Pat Cummins taking 4/32 in 11.3 overs. Australia inflicted a demoralising defeat on newly crowned ICC World Cup Champion England  despite conceding a 90 run first innings lead.

Chasing a target of 398, England were all out for just 146 in 52.3 overs with all-rounder Chris Woakes scoring 37 and captain  Joe Root and opener Jason Roy scoring 28 each. Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow (wk) scored 6 each while Jos Buttler scored 1. Moeen Ali made 4 and opener Rory Burns 11. Joe Denly scored 11.

Australia now lead the five-match Ashes series 1-0. Steven Smith, who scored century in both the innings of the test, was declared Player of the Match.

Australia were all out for 284 in their first innings and declared their 2nd innings at 487 /7 with Steven Smith and Mathhew Wade scoring tons. England were all out for 374 in their first innings and 146 in the second innings. Australia had won toss and opted to bat first.
