Patna : World No 2 5 P V Sindhu, 24, India, lost to World No 2 Akane Yamaguchi, 22, Japan, in the quarter-finals of Daihatsu Yonex Japan Open, an HSBC BWF World Tour Super 750 badminton tournament, at Tokyo, Japan, on July 26, 2019. Yamaguchi had also defeated Sindhu in the final of Indonesia Open, an HSBC BWF World Tour Super 1,000 event, at Jakarta, Indonesia, on July 21, 2019.

Fourth seed Yamaguchi beat 5th seed Sindhu 21-18, 21-15 in 50 minutes in the quarter-finals Japan Open on July 26 to advance to the SFs. Yamaguchi won 42 rallies to 33 by Sindhu. She won 4 consecutive points to 6 by the India. Both the games saw some long rallies. Sindhu, however, still leads Yamaguchi 10-6 Head to Head.

World No 3 and 2017 World Champion Nozomi Okuhara, 24, Japan, the 3rd seed, beat World No 24 Nitchaon Jindapol, 28, Thailand, in a tough three-game contest 16-21, 21-16, 21-19 in 80 minutes in the quarter-finals to reach the SFs of the tournament. Okuhara won 58 rallies in the match to 56 by Jindapol. Okuhara now leads Jindapol 6-1 Head to Head.
