Patna : New Zealand (NZ) beat India by 18 runs in the first semi-finals of the CWC at Emirates Old Trafford, Manchester, UK, on July 10, 2019, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja playing the innings of his life adding 116 runs with M S Dhoni (wk) for the 7th wicket notwithstanding. The partnership between Jadeja and Dhoni had brought India back into the match but then both departed in quick succession which cost India the match. Rohit Sharma, Lokesh Rahul, and Virat Kohli scored 1 run each in the crucial match. Matt Henry was declared Player of the Match.

Dhoni once again played a terribly slow innings scoring 50 in 72 balls with just 1 four and a 1 six and can be rightly held responsible for India’s defeat in a match that went to the wire. Dhoni was run out in the 49th over of the match. Jadeja scored 77 in 59 balls hitting 4 fours 4 sixes, the highest from either side, proving yet again he is not a bits and pieces player. Jadeja had also taken 1/34 in 10 overs in the NZ innings.

Replying to NZ’s 239/8 in 50 overs, India were all out for 221 in 49.3 overs. For NZ, fast bowler Matt Henry took 3/37 in 10 overs while Trent Boult took 2/42 in 10 overs. Spinner Mitchell Santner took 2/34 in 10 ovrers while Lockie Ferguson and James Neesham took one wicket each. Ironically, NZ had narrowly qualified for the semi-finals but bounced back to end India’s CWC campaign. Kohli said NZ deserved to win.
