Patna : World No 31 Petra Martic, 28, Croatia, stunned World No 2 Karolina Pliskova, 27, Czech Republic, to enter the Round of 16 at French Open. Martic beat 2nd seed Pliskova 6-3, 6-3 in the third round at Roland Garros, Paris, France, on May 31, 2019.Martic broke Pliskova’s service 5 times in the match while the latter broke her service twice. Martic won 6 games in a row in the match to 3 by Pliskova, who had won the Italian Open women’s singles title on May 19, 2019. Martic will face World No 88 Kaia Kanepi, 33, Estonia, in the Round of 16.

World No 19 Garbine Muguruza, the 2016 French Open champion, beat World No 9 Elina Svitolina, Ukraine, 6-3, 6-3 in the 3rd round to advance to the 4th round of the clay court event. Muguruza won 7 break points to 4 by Svitolina. Muguruza also won 4 games in a row in the match to 2 by Svitolina.

World No 7 Sloane Stephens, 26, USA, also advanced to the Round of 16 beating World No 71 Polona Hercog, 28, Slovenia,  6-3, 5-7, 6-4 in the third round. Hercog fired 6 Aces in the match to 2 by Stephens, the 2017 US Open Champion. Stephens won 6 break points to 5 by Hercog.
