Patna : World No 7 in WTA rankings Karolina Pliskova, 27, Czech Republic, won the Italian Open women’s singles title on May 19, 2019, defeating World No 42 Johanna Konta, 28, Britain, in the final. Pliskova beat Konta in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 in 85 minutes in the final for her 13th career title, her first Italian Open. Pliskova had reached US Open final in 2016. She had also reached Australian Open semi-finals in 2019.

Pliskova broke Konta’s service twice in the match besides winning 3 games in a row. She won 44 service points during the match to 39 by Konta. Pliskova also fired 5 Aces in the match to none by Konta, who had reached Wimbledon semi-finals in 2017 and Australian Open semi-finals in 2016. Both the players committed 3 double faults each. Pliskova’s winning percentage on both her first and second serve ( 74% & 83 %) was much higher than that of Konta’s (68% & 50 %). Konta had defeated World No Kiki Bertens, Netherlands, in the semi-finals.
