Bagaha : Tirhut Canal has failed to provide adequate water to the farmers under Bagaha block this summer and crops like maize, mung, vegetables and sugarcane  grown in thousands of hectare are weathering away for want of water. Eastern Main Canal, which originates from Valmikinagar Gandak Barrage under  Bagaha Sub-Division  in West Champaran district on Indo-Nepal border, has three branches called Tirhut, Tribeni, and Done canals.

An Assistant Engineer (AE) of Tirahut Canal Sub-division, Bagaha, Sanjay  Kumar Suman, said that the canal has restored discharge of 2,500 cusec of water. But, many farmers including Kasim Ansari and Jagadish Prasad of Nayagaon Rampurwa say that Pathakauli and Kathaphor distributeries can irrigate crop fields only after discharge of over 4,000 cusecs water in the canal. At present, the water discharge is so low that that the outlets of the canal can not provide water  for irrigation.

Many big farmers are, however, able to irrigate their crops using diesel pumpsets incurring heavy expenditure while the small farmers appear helpless as their bumper crops suffer for  want of water. The farmers have not sown Garima  paddy seed so far. Executive Engineer Girish Chandra said that in view of problems facing the farmers water  discharge  in the canal will be increased.

A social worker Bidya Prasad of village Ausani  said that Water  Resources  Department (WRD) engineers had failed to do anything to help the farmers.
