Cilic, Khachanov advance to 2nd round of Madrid Open, Basilashvili upset

Patna : World No 11 Marin Cilic, 30, Croatia, and World No 13 Karen Khachanov, 22, Russia,advanced to the second round of Madrid Open, Spain, on May 6, 2019.

Cilic beat World No 61 Martin Klizan, Slovakia, a qualifier, in three sets 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 in the first round in 2hr 38 minutes. Both the players fired 8 Aces each in the match. Klizan won 3 break points to 2 by Cilic. Klizan won 7 games in a row in the match to 3 by Cilic.

Khachanov beat World No 55 Jaume Munar, 22, Spain, in three sets 6-4, 6-7, 6-3 in the first round.in 3 hours. Khachanov fired 4 Acdes in the match to just 1 by Munar. Khachanov won 6 break points in the match to 4 by Munar. Munar won 73 service points to 71 by Khachanov.

World No 37 Frances Tiafoe, 21, USA, upset  World No 17 Nikoloz Basilashvili, 27, Georgia,  6-7, 6-3, 6-4 in the first round in 2 hours. Basilashvili fired 12 Aces in the match to 11 by Tiafoe. But, Basilashvili also committed  10 double faults. Tiafoe won 4 break points to 2 by Basilashvili.

World No 57 Taylor Fritz, 21, USA,  beat World No 46 Grigor Dimitrov, 27, Bulgaria, 7-6, 7-6 in the first round. Fritz fired 15 Aces in the match to 8 by Dimitrov. Both the players won 2 break points each. But, Fritz won 5 games in a row to 3 by Dimitrov.
