Patna : World No 14 Daniil Medvedev, 23, Russia, stunned World No 1 and top seed Novak Djokovic, 31, Serbia, in the quarter-finals of Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters, Monaco. Medvedev, the 10th seed, upset Djokovic in a tough three-set contest 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 in 2 hr 20 minutes to advance to the semi-finals of the tournament at Monte-Carlo Country Club.

Djokovic, a two-time former champion here, was struggling to hold his service throughout the match and committed 21 unforced errors in the first set alone. Medvedev broke Djokovic’s service 5 times while the latter broke his service twice. Medvedev won 4 games in a row in the match to 3 by Djokovic, the winner of 15 Grand Slam singles titles.

Medvedev’s winning percentage on his first and second serve ( 69% & 66 %) was better than that of Djokovic ( 65 % & 51 %).  Djokovic fired 4 Aces in the match to 3 by Medvedev. Djokovic committed 3 double faults to 2 by Medvedev. Medvedev won 54 service points to 52 by Djokovic. Djokovic had also made early exit in India Wells Masters and Miami Masters in USA in March 2019.

World No 48 Dusan Lajovic, 28, Serbia, also advanced to the semi-finals of the tournament defeating World No 96 Lorenzo Sonego, 23, Italy, 6-4, 7-5 in 1 hr 47 minute in the quarter-finals on April 19, 2019. Lajovic broke Sonego’s service thrice in the match while the latter broke his service once. Lajovic won 46 service points to 39 by Sonego. Both the players won 3 games each in a row. Sonego served 3 Aces in the match to just 1 by Lajovic.
