Patna : Mumbai Indians (MI) defeated Sunrise Hyderabad (SRH) by 40 in the 19th match of IPL-12 at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad, due to a sensational spell of fast bowling by Antguan Alzarri Shaheim Joseph, 22, taking 6/12 in 3.4 overs, an IPL record, on his debut. His victims included David Warner (15), Vijay Shankar (5), Deepak Hooda (20), Rashid Khan (0), Bhuvaneshwar Kumar (2), and Siddharth Kaul (0). Alzarri Joseph was named Player of the Match. Sohail Tanvir, Pakistan, playing for RR had taken 6/14 against CSK at Jaipur in 2008. SRH had won the toss but opted to bowl.
Chasing a target of 137, SRH were all out for just 96 in 17.4 overs. Apart from Alzarri Joseph’s dream spell, spinner Rahul Chahar took 2/21 in 4 overs, Jasprit Bumrah 1/16 in 3 overs, and Jason Behrendorff 1/28 in 4 overs.
Batting first, MI had scored 136/7 in 20 overs with Kieron Pollard scoring an unbeaten 46 in 26 balls hitting 2 fours and 4 sixes while openers Quinton de Kock and Rohit Sharma (captain) scored 19 and 11 runs respectively with both the players hitting one six each. Ishan Kishan scored 17 with 2 fours while Hardik Pandya scored 14 with one six. MI scored 39 runs in the last two overs. For SRH, Siddharth Kaul took 2/34 in 4 overs.
MI were looking down and out when SRH reached 27/0 in just 3 overs. But, MI’s decision to play Alzarri in this match proved a masterstroke as he turned the table on the SRH. Alzarri was introduced in the 5th over and he bowled opener David Warner on his first ball. In fact, his first over was a wicket maiden.
