Bagaha : The carcass of a female Rhinoceros was found in a sugarcane field near Rohua Nala on the fringe of Madanpur, Sector 26, Bherihari sub-beat under Valmikinagar Forest Range in Valmikinagar Tiger Reserve (VTR) in West Champaran district on March 6, 2019, morning.

The Rhinoceros appears to have been killed a few days back  as the carcass was smelling foul. The VTR officials, who were informed about it by the locals, took the carcass, which bore injury marks, under their custody. Sources said that 13 one horned Rhinocerous had migrated here from Chitawan National Park, Nepal, in river Gandak deluge in 2018. Two of them were killed earlier while 9 Rhinocerous were rescued by Chitawan National Park officials with the help of the VTR on August 13, 2018, but remaining two were living here of which carcass of a female  rhino carcass was recovered on March 6 morning. The VTR was treating them as guest and had taken measures to protect them from poachers.

The recovery of Rhino carcass near Rohua Nala has shocked the VTR officials. Gaurav Ojha, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Valmikinagar, Division -2, said prima facie it appears that the Rhino died due to some ailments. The actual cause of her death  would be clear only after post-mortum report comes, he said.
