Patna : South Africa (SA) beat Sri Lanka (SL) by 8 wickets in the 1st ODI at The Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg, South Africa, on March 3, 2019, with captain Faf du Plessis, 34, scoring an unbeaten 112 in 114 balls with 15 fours, his 11th ODI ton, and wicketkeeper and opener Quinton de Kock scoring 81 in 72 balls with 11 fours. Rassie van der Dussen remained unbeaten on 32 in 43 balls with 2 fours. Du Plessis was named Player of the Match. South Africa now lead the five-match ODI series 1-0. South Africa had won the toss but opted to bowl.

Batting first, Sri Lanka were all out for 231 in 47 overs with Kusal Mendis scoring 60 in 73 balls with 5 fours and a six while Oshada Fernando ( run out) scored 49 in 49 balls with 5 fours and 2 sixes. Dhananjaya de Silva scored 39 in 52 balls with 3 fours while Kusal Perera made 33 in 36 balls with 4 fours. Openers Niroshan Dickwella ( wicketkeeper) and Upul Tharanga scored 8 and 9 runs respectively and both of them fell to fast bowler Lungi Ngidi. Captain Lashith Malinga also fell to Ngidi for 15.

For South Africa, Lungi Ngidi took 3/60 while spinner Imran Tahir took 3/26. Fast bowlers Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje took one wicket each. Nortje, 25, made his ODI debut with match.

In Reply, South Africa scored 232/2 in 38.5 overs only with captain Faf du Plessis and opener Quinton de Kock adding 136 runs for the 2nd wicket. Faf du Plessis added 82 runs with Rassie van der Dussen for the 3rd wicket.
