Kukushkin upsets Shapovalov to enter QFs of Open 13 Provence

Patna : World No 50 Mikhail Kukushkin, 31, Kazakhstan, upset World No 25 Denis Shapovalov, 19, Canada, in the Round of 16 to enter the quarter-finals of  Open 13 Provence also know as ATP Marseille Open in France. Kukushkin beat Shapovalov 6-4, 7-6 in second round in 1 hr 22 minutes on February 20, 2019, 18 Aces hammered by the Canadian notwithstanding.

Kukushkin served only 2 Aces in the match. Kukushkin though won 3 games in a row in the match besides breaking Shapovalov’s service once. Shapovalov also committed 3 double faults in the match.

World No 48 Matteo Berrettini, 22, Italy, beat World No 35 Jeremy Chardy, 32, France, 7-6, 7-6 in a tough contest in the first round. Berrettini fired 16 Aces in the match to 15 by Chardy. Berrettini committed 3 double faults to 2 by Chardy. Both the players won 1 break point each. Berrettini won 4 games in a row in the match to 2 by Chardy.

World No 130 Gregoire Barrere, 25, France, a qualifier, upset World No 94 Jiri Vesely, 25, Czech Republic, 7-6, 6-3 in the first round in 1 hr 28 minute. Gregoire won 2 break points besides winning 3 games in a row in the match.
