Medvedev, Verdasco, Monfils, Fucsovics reach QFs of ATP Sofia Open

Patna : World No 16 in ATP rankings Daniil Medvedev, 22, Russia, World No 26 Fernando Verdasco, 35, Spain, World No 33 Gael Monfils, 32, France, and World No 47 Marton Fucsovics, 26, Hungary, sailed into the quarter-finals of ATP Sofia Open at Sofia, Bulgaria, on February 7, 2019.

Medvedev, the 3rd seed who had reached the 4th round of Australian Open in 2019, beat World No 54 Robin Haase, 31, Netherlands, in a three-set contest 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 in the second round at  Sofia. Medvedev fired 8 Aces in the match to 2 by Haase. Medvedev, however, also committed 6 double faults to 3 by Haase. But, he won 5 break points to 2 by Haase. He also won 5 games in a row to 3 by his rival. Medvedev will face World No 38 Martin Klizan, 29, Slovakia, in the quarter-finals.

Verdasco, the 6th seed, beat World No 56 Marius Copil, 28, Romania, in three-sets 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 in the second round. Verdasco, an Australian Open semi-finalist in 2009 and Wimbledon quarter-finalist in 2013, won 4 break points to one by Copil. Verdasco fired 8 Aces in the match to 10 by Copil. Verdasco won 5 games in a row in the match to 3 by his rival. Verdasco will play Matteo Berrettini, Italy, in the quarter-finals.

Maonfils beat World No 55 Mikhail Kukushkin, 31, Kazakhstan, 7-5, 6-3 in the second round. Monfil hammered 14 Aces in the match to just 1 by Kukushkin. Monfils also won 4 break points to 2 by Copil. He also won 4 games in a row in the match to 2 by his rival.

Fucsovics beat World No 121 Yannick Maden, 29, Germany, in three-sets 7-6, 3-6, 6-4 in the second round. Yannick though won 5 break points to 4 by Fucsovics. Fucsovics fired 5 Aces to 4 by his rival. Both the players 4 games each in a row in the match. Fucsovics will face World No 18 Roberto Bautista Agut, 30, Spain, in the quarter-finals.
