Patna : World No 4 in WTA rankings and 2018 US Open champion Naomi Osaka, 21, Japan, won the Australian Open (AO) singles title on January 26, 2019, beating two-times former Wimbledon champion and World No 6 Petra Kvitová, 28, Czech Republic, in a three-set encounter at Melbourne Park, Melbourne, Australia. Osaka beat Kvitová 7-6, 5-7, 6-4 to win her second consecutive Grand Slam title.

Osaka will become the World No 1 player when the next WTA rankings are released on January 28, 2019. World No 1 Simona Halep, 27, Romania, had lost in the Round of 16 of AO this year to Serena Williams. Osaka had won US Open women’s singles title in 2018 defeating Serena Williams.

Osaka fired 9 Aces in the match to 5 by Kvitová. Both the players committed 4 double faults each. They also won 3 break points each in the match. Osaka won 4 consecutive games in the match while Kvitová won 5. Osaka’s winnings percentage on her first serve ( 76%) was better than that of Kvitová ( 71 %). Kvitová’s winning percentage on her second serve ( 51%) was slight better than that of Osaka ( 50%). Osaka won 71 service points to 73 by Kvitová.  Osaka had beaten World No 8 Karolina Pliskova in the SFs and World No 7 Elina Svitolina in the QFs.
