Patna : Chasing a target of  158, India were 41/0 after 9 overs against New Zealand (NZ) in the first ODI at McLean Park,  Napier, New Zealand, at dinner break on January 23, 2019, with Shikhar Dhawan batting on 29 in 32 balls with 5 fours and Rohit Sharma batting on 11 in 22 balls with one four.

Earlier, electing to bat after winning the toss, New Zealand were all out for 157 in 38 overs with spinner Kuldeep Yadav taking 4/39 in 10 overs and Mohammad Shami taking 3/19 in 6 overs. Yuzvendra Chahal took 2/43 in 10 overs while Kedar Jadhav took 1/17 in 3 overs.

For New Zealand, captain Kane Williamson was top scorer for his team with 64 runs in 81 balls with 7 fours while Ross Taylor made 24 in 41 balls with 3 fours. Both the openers : Martin Guptil and Colin Munro, fell to fast bowler Mohammad Shami for 5 and 8 runs respectively. Wicketkeeper Tom Latham fell to Chahal for 11 while Henry Nicholls fell to Kedar Jadhav for 12. Mitchell Santner fell to Shami for 14 while Doug Bracewell fell to KuldeepYadav for 7. Tim Southee remained unbeaten on 9 with a six. Kuldeep took the wickets of Williamson, Nicholls, Lockie Ferguson, and Trent Boult.
