Patna : World No 8 in ATA rankings and two-time former Wimbledon Champion Petra Kvitová, 28, Czech Republic, stormed into the semi-finals of Australian Open (AO) beating World No 15 Ashleigh Barty, 22, Australia, in the quarter-finals at Melbourne Park, Melbourne, Australia, on January 22, 2019. It was Barty’s first appearance in the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam tournament though she had reached 4th round at US Open in 2018.

Kvitová, who had also reached the semi-finals of Australian Open in 2012, beat Barty, a former cricketer, in straight sets 6-1, 6-4 in the quarter-finals winning 3 break points besides 3 games in a row during the match. She also served 3 Aces to 2 by her Australian rival. Kvitová won 42 service points to 25 by Barty. Kvitová will face unseeded Danielle Rose Collins, 25, USA, in the semi-finals on January 24, 2019.
