Patna : World No 15 in ATP rankings Stefanos Tsitsipas, 20, Greece, stunned defending champion and World No 3 Roger Federer, 37, Switzerland, in a four-set tough contest in the 4th round of Australian Open at Melbourne Park, Melbourne, Australia, on January 20, 2019, to advance to the quarter-finals of the tournament, his first Grand Slam quarter-finals. Tsitsipas beat Federer 6-7, 7-6, 7-5, 7-6 in a massive upset in the tournament. Federer was bidding for his 7th Australian Open title this year having won it in 2004, 2006, 2007, 2010, 2017, and 2018.
Tsitsipas fired 20 Aces in the match to 12 by Federer. Both the players won 3 games each in a row in the match. Federer’s winning percentage on his first serve (79%) was just a shade better than that Tsitsipas ( 78%). But, Tsitsipas’ winning percentage on his second serve ( 65%) was much better than that Federer ( 62%). Tsitsipas also committed one double fault but he also won a break point in the match. In all, Tsitsipas won 136 service points to 114 by Federer, who has won 20 Grand Slam singles titles including 6 Australian Open, 8 Wimbledon, 5 US Open, and 1 French Open. Federer has won 99 career titles. Tsitsipas, on the other hand, has won just 1 title so far in his career.
Federer, who failed to defend his 2,000 points won in 2018 after winning the AO singles title, will slip in the next ATP ranking losing his World No 3 spot.
