Kohlschreiber, Sandgren, Norrie enter SF of ATP Auckland Open

Patna : World No 34 in ATP rankings Phillip Kohlschreiber, 35, Germany, upset 2nd seed and World No 13 Fabio Fognini, 31, Italy, in the quarter-finals of Auckland Open ( ASB Classic), Auckland, New Zealand, an ATP 250 point event played on hard court, on January 10, 2019, to advance to the semi-finals of the tournament.

Kohlschreiber beat Fognini 6-3, 6-1 in the quarter-finals firing 5 Aces. Fognini committed 7 double faults in the match to 1 by Kohlschreiber, who won 4 break points. Kohlschreiber also won 5 games in a row in the match.

World No 63 Tennys Sandgren, 27, USA, advanced to the semi-finals after beating World No 54 Leonardo Mayer, 31, Argentina, in the quarter-finals 6-3, 7-6. Sandgren fired 11 Aces in the match to 3 by Mayer. Sandgren’s winning percentage on both his first and serve was better than that of Mayer. Sandgren also won 3 games in a row in the match. Sandgren will face Kohlschreiber in the semi-finals on January 11, 2019.

But, World No 50 Taylor Fritz, 21, USA, who had upset World No 10 and top seed John Isner in the Round of 16 on January 9, 2019, lost to World No 93 Cameron Norrie, 23, UK, 6-7, 3-6 in the quarter-finals on January 10. Norrie fired 11 Aces in the match to 6 by Fritz. Norrie also won a break point. Norrie’s winning percentage ( 80%) on his first serve was much higher than that of Fritz ( 69%).
