Patna : Top seed and World No 10 in ATP rankings John Isner, 33, USA, suffered shock defeat at the hands of World No 50 Taylor Fritz, 21, USA, in the Round of 16 at ASB Classic, Auckland, New Zealand, an ATP event, on January 9, 2019.

Fritz beat Isner in a tough contest 7-6, 7-6 to enter the quarter-finals of the tournament. Isner though fired 26 Aces in the match to 12 by Fritz. He, however, committed 4 double faults to 2 by Fritz. Both the players won one bfreak point each. Fritz won 3 games in a row in the match to 2 by Isner. Fritz won 59 service points while Isner won 58.

World No 63 Tennys Sandgren, 27, USA, stunned World No 18 and 3rd seed Marco Cecchinato, 26, Italy, in the Round of 16 to advance to the quarter-finals of the event. Sandgren beat Cecchinato 6-3, 6-3. Sandgren fired 13 Aces in the match to 4 by Cecchinato, who also committed a double fault. Sandgren won 3 break points to none by his rival. Sandgren’s winning percentage on both his first and second serve was also much better than that of Cecchinato, who also won 3 games in a row in the match.

World No 13 Fabio Fognini, 31, Italy, and World No 54 Leonardo Mayer, 31, Argentina, also advanced to the quarter-finals. Fognini beat World No Peter Gojowczyk, 29, Germany, 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 in the Round of 16 on January 9. Gojowczyk fired 10 Aces in the match to 5 by Fognini. Fognini won 4 break points to 3 by Gojowczyk.

Mayer beat World No 52 Matteo Berrettini, 22, Italy, 5-7, 7-6, 6-3 in the Round of 16. Mayer served 7 Aces in the match to 6 by his opponent. Mayer, however, also committed 7 double faults to 2 by Berrettini. Both the player won 1 break point each.

David Ferrer, 36, Spain, also entered the quarter-finals after his opponent and 4th seed Pablo Carreno Busta, 27, Spain, the World No 24, retired after just 2 games in the first set.
