Youth declared dead in accident by Bhojpur police is alive, his friend had died

Ara : A young Mason Ranjeet Kumar whom the police had declared dead in a road accident near village Mohammadpur on Ara-Chhapra main road under Koelwar police station on in Bhojpur District on December 27, 2018, and put his name in the inquest for post-mortem at Sadar Hospital, Ara, returned home alive the same day to the pleasant surprise of his kin. The incident has exposed the functioning of police as it was Ranjeet’s friend Akhilesh Mahto, who had died in the accident.

Ranjeet Kumar, son of Rajan Rai of village Daudpur under Shahpur police station in Patna district, lives with his cousin sister Laxmi at village Pachrukhia under Koelwar police station in Bhojpur district and works as Mason there. Ranjeet’s friend Akhilesh Mahato came to his maternal grand-father Ramayan Mahto’s place at Jamalpur under Koelwar police station on December 26, 2018. He also came to meet Ranjeet and was returning to his village taking Ranjeet’s mobile phone with him but on way to his village, a speeding truck crushed him to death on Ara-Chhapara main road.

Police on the basis of mobile phone identified the deceased as Ranjeet and entered his name in the inquest made for the post-mortem and also informed his family members. Police brought the body to the Sadar Hospital for post-mortem and the doctor there performed the post-mortem on December 27. Ranjeet’s family members were taken aback when he reached his native village Daudpur.

Station House Officer, Koelwar, Pankaj Saini, admitted his fault and said that police inadvertently entered the name of a wrong person in the inquest and when the fault was detected, police sent a corrigendum to Sadar Hospital, Ara, authorities.

Superintendent, Sadar Hospital, Ara, Dr Satish Kumar Sinha said that the hospital administration was not at fault with at all and added when the corrigendum will reach the hospital, the hospital administration will change the name in the post-mortem report.
