Patna : The first test between New Zealand (NZ) and Sri Lanka (SL) at Basin Reserve, Wellington, New Zealand, ended in a draw on day 5 as play was stopped due to rain. Only 13 overs of play was possible on the day.

Resuming at their overnight score of 259/3, Sri Lanka had reached 287/3 when play was stopped due to rain with Kusal Mendis, 23, batting on 141 in 335 balls with 16 fours ( his 5th ton) and Angelo Mathews, 31, batting on 120 in 323 balls with 11 fours, his 8th century. New Zealand opener Tom Latham, who had scored an unbeaten 264 in  New Zealand’s first innings, was declared Player of the Match.

Sri Lanka had scored 282 in their first innings with Angelo Mathews scoring 83 while New Zealand were all out for 578 in their first innings.
