Patna : World No 7 in WTA rankings Elina Svitolina, 24, Ukraine, on October 28, 2018, night, lifted the singles title at WTA Finals at Singapore beating 2017 US Open Champion and World No 6 Sloane Stephens, 25, USA. Svitolina, who had won all her three Group Stage matches, beat Stephens in three-sets 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 in the championship match at Singapore Indoor Stadium.
Svitolina won 6 break points in the match to 3 by Stephens. She also served 2 Aces to none by Stephens. Svitolina also won 6 games in a row to 3 by Stephens.
It was the 48th edition of the singles event and 43rd edition of double event. Eight top singles players and 8 doubles teams participated in the tournament.
With this win, Svitolina’s WTA rankings will improve considerably as she would get 1,750 points for winning the title, Group Stage matches, and semi-finals. The next WTA rankings will be released on October 29, 2018. The team winning the doubles title will get 1,500 points. The 2017 singles champion and World No 3 Caroline Wozniacki, 28, Canada, could not qualify for the semi-finals losing two of her three Group Stage matches. World No Simona Halep, 27, Romania, could not play in the tournament due to injury.
