Patna : World No 1 in Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings Tai Tzu Ying, 24, Chinese Taipei, beat World No 3 P V Sindhu, 23, India, in the badminton women’s single final at 18th Asian Games at Jakarta -Palembang, Indonesia, on August 28, 2018, to clinch the Gold Medal in the event. Sindhu settled for a Silver Medal finishing second yet again in a major tournament. It was India’s first Silver Medal in Badminton at Asian Games.
Tai Tzu Ying beat Sindhu in straight games 21-13, 2-16 in 34 minute in the final. Saina Nehwal, 28, India, had won Bronze Medal in the event on August 27, 2018. It is for the first time that India has won two individual medals in Badminton at the Asian Games.
Sindhu had recently lost to Carolina Marin, Spain, in the final of BWF World Championship 2018. she had also lost in the 2016 Olympic final besides losing to Saina Nehwal in the singles final at 208 Commonwealth Games at Gold Coast, Australia. Sindhu has not won a singles title so far in 2018. She was playing in her fifth final this year.
Tai Tzu Ying now has a 10-3 head to head record against Sindhu. Ying had beaten Saina Nehwal in the semi-finals.
