Patna : World Number 48 Su-Wei Hsieh, 32, Chinese Taipei, stunned World Number 1 and top seed Simona Halep, 26, Romania, in the women’s singles third round of Wimbledon tennis championship on July 7, 2018, causing a massive upset in the tournament. Halep had recently won the French Open singles title.

Hsieh beat Halep 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 in a tough contest to enter the Round of 16. She had also reached Round of 16 of Australian Open 2018. Halep committed 4 double faults in the match to 3 by Hsieh. Both the players won 7 break points each. But, Hsieh won 5 games in row in the match to 3 by Halep. The only Ace in the match was served by Halep.

World No 10 Angelique Kerber, 30, Germany, also entered the Round of 16 defeating World Number 18 Naomi Osaka, 20, Japan, 6-2, 6-4 in the third round. Osaka fired 4 Aces in the match to 2 by Kerber, who won 3 break points.

World Number 33 Dominika Cibulkova, 29, Slovakia, too entered the Round of 16 defeating World Number 15 Elise Mertens, 22, Belgium, 6-2, 6-2, in the third round.

World Number 12 Jelena Ostapenko, 21, Latvia, entered the Round of 16 defeating Vitaliya Diatchenko, Russia,  6-0, 6-4 in the third round. Ostapenko is a former French Open Champion.
