Patna : Belgium beat Japan 3-2 in Round of 16 match at Rostov Arena, Russia, on Jul2, 2018, late night to enter the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup 2018. Belgium came back from 0-2 down to defeat Japan 3-2. The score was 0-0 at half-time.

Belgium thus became the first country to come back from 0-2 down to win a World Cup knock stage match since Portugal beat South Korea in the quarter-finals 5-3 coming back from 0-3 down in 1966 World Cup. Belgium have reached the quarter-finals in successive tournaments. Belgium had reached semi-finals in the 1986 World Cup and quarter-finals in 2014 World Cup. Japan had also made Round of 16 in 2002 and 2010.

Midfielder Genki Haraguchi scored the first goal for his country in the 48th minute while Midfielder Takashi Inui scored the second goal in the 52nd minute giving Japan a 2-0 lead. But, thereafter Belgium were all over Japan with Defender Jan Vertonghen scoring the first goal for his country in the 69th minute while Marouane Fellaini scoring the second goal in the 74th minute making it 2-2. Nacer Chadli scored the third goal for Belgium in the 94th minute making it 3-2.
