Patna : Serbia defeated Costa Rica 1-0 in a Group E match of FIFA World Cup 2018 at Samara Arena, City of Samara, Russia, on June 17, 2018, evening.  Skipper and defender Aleksandar Kolarov scored the winning goal for Serbia through a stunning free kick in the 56th minute. The score was 0-0 at half time. It was the first encounter between the two countries.

Costa Rica, who are making their 5th appearance in the World Cup, had reached the quarter-finals of the tournament in 2014. For Serbia, it is their second appearance at the event as an independent  country.

Serbia’s Aleksandar Prijovic was yellow carded for catching the face of  Costa Rica defender. Branislav Ivanovic, Serbia, was also shown yellow card in the 59th minute. Costa Rica midfielders David Guzman and Francisco Calvo were also shown yellow card during the match.
