Patna : World No. 1 and five time champion Rafael Nadal, 31, Spain, lost in the quarter-finals of  ATP Madrid Open Masters 1000 at La Caga Magica, Madrid, Spain, to World No. 7 Domic Thiem, 24, Austria, in a massive upset on May 11, 2018, night.

Thiem completely outplayed Nadal in the quarter-final defeating him 7-5, 6-3, to enter the semi-finals of the event. With his loss in the quarter-finals, Nadal will loose his World No. 1 rank when the ATP rankings are released on May 14, 2018. Roger Federer, Switzerland, will regain the World N0.1 rank.

World N0. 8 Kevin Anderson, South Africa, also entered the semi-finals on May 11. He defeated Dusan Lajovic, Serbia, 7-6, 3-6, 6-3 in the quarter-finals.

Women’s Section : Kiki Bertens, 26, Netherlands, entered the final of Madrid Open defeating World N0. 7 Caroline Garcia, France, 6-2, 6-2, in the semi-finals.
