Patna : India clinched a gold and two silver medals in the badminton singles events at Gold Coast Commonwealth Games (CWG) in Australia on April 15, 2018. World Number 12 in Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings Saina Nehwal, 28, beat World Number 3 P V Sindhu, 22, in an all Indian summit clash in the women’s singles final 21-18, 23-12 in a close contest to clinch gold medal. Obviously, Sindhu won the silver medal.

In the first set, Saina dominated Sindhu. But, in the second set Sindhu maintained a narrow lead over Saina and at one stage was 20-19. But, Saina soon made it 20 all and finally won 23-21. Saina now leads Sindhu 4-1 head to head. Saina hails from Hissar, Haryana. Sindhu belongs to Hyderabad, Telangana. Sindhu had won silver medal in 2016 Rio Olympics and Bronze medal in 2014 Glasgow CWG.

In the men’s singles final, World Number 1 Kidambi Srikanth, 25, India,  lost to World Number 7 and three time Olympics silver medallist Lee Chong Wei, 35, Malaysia, in a three set thriller and settled for a silver medal. Lee Chong Wei beat Srikanth 19-21, 21-14, 21-14 in the final. Srikanth hails from Ravulapalem, Andhra Pradesh.

Lee had won silver medals in men’s badminton singles in 2008 Beijing, 2012 London and 2016 Rio Olympics.
