Pregnant woman killed for dowry at Bagaha village, 1 held

Bagaha: A pregnant woman Rubi Devi, 26, wife of Pappu Gupta of village Khalawapatti under Dhanaba police station in Bagaha police district, was killed for dowry allegedly by her in-laws on April 9, 2018, late evening. The accused were trying to consign the body to flame but Dhanaha police reached the spot on time and recovered the body from burning pyre and sent it to Government Hospital, Bagaha, for autopsy. Police arrested Rubi Devi’s father in – law Ramchandra Gupta on April 10, 2018.

SHO, Dhanaha police satation, Rajesh Kumar, said that police swung into action soon after the deceased father Bhola Gupta, a resident of Singarpatti in Kushinagar district in UP, informed them about the incident. Police recovered the body from burning pyre, he said.

According to the SHO, Bhola Gupta, in an FIR lodged with police, said that his daughter was married to Pappu Gupta four years back and he had given Rs 1.5 lakh as a dowry but her in- laws were demanding  Rs 3 lakh more and a four- wheeler. Bhola Gupta alleged that Rubi’s  in-laws used to torture her for dowry. Rubi Devi has left behind her 18 month old daughter.

Bhola Gupta has made six persons including Rubi’s husband Pappu Gupta, and her father- in- law Ramchandra Gupta named accused in the FIR, the SHO said.
