Patna : India won gold medal in Table Tennis (TT) Men’s category beating Nigeria 3-0 in the final on April 9, 2018, at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games (CWG). Achanta Sarath Kamal, 35, and Sathiyan Gnansekaran, 25, won their respective singles matches to give India a headstart.
Sathiyan, an engineer ranked 49th in the world, then teamed up with Harmeet Desai to win the doubles tie to clinch the gold medal. Achanta Sarath Kamal hails from Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
India’s Women’s TT Team had clinched gold in the team event on April 8, 2018, defeating Singapore 3-1 in the final. For India’s Men’s team, it was the second gold at the CWG as they had earlier won gold at 2006 Melbourne CWG. Achanta Sarath Kamal, ranked 51st in the world, had also won gold medal in men’s singles at 2006 Melbourne CWG. He is a product of Loyola College, Chennai. Sathiyan is also from Chennai.
India has so far won 19 medals at CWG 2018 including 10 gold and 4 silver medals.
