Patna : India won gold medal in the women’s Table Tennis (TT)  team event at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games (CWG) on April 8, 2018, defeating defending champion Singapore 3-1 in a stunning upset courtesy Manika Batra, 22, the World Number 58, who led from the front. Manika beat  Yihan Zhou in straight games in the final match of the event. Earlier, she had defeated World Number 4 Feng Tianwei, 31 years,  3-2 in a huge upset. Manika was down 1-2 after the third game but won the next two games to emerge winner.

It is the first time India has won the gold medal in the women’s team event at CWG. The Indian women’s team comprised Manika Batra, Madhurika Patkar, and Mouma Das.

India had lost in the final of the event at the 2010 CWG to Singapore. The women’s team events started in 2002 and since then Singapore had been winning the gold medal in this event.

Earlier on the day, the Indian women’s Table Tennis team had beaten England in the semi-final 3-0. India had also defeated Malaysia 3-0 in the quarterfinals.

Manika hails from Naraina Vihar in Delhi and started playing Table Tennis when she was four year old. Her sister Anchal and brother Sahil also played Table Tennis. Manika trained under Sandeep Gupta. She had lost in the first round in the 2016 Rio Olympics.
