Patna: Police arrested Arijit Shashwat, son of senior BJP leader and Union Minister Ashwini Kumar Choubey, near Hanuman Mandir, Patna, on April 1, 2018, in connection with a case related to clashes in Bhagalpur on March 17, 2018, after a Bhagalpur court rejected his anticipatory bail petition on March 31, 2018. An arrest warrant was issued against Arijit Shashwat on March 24. Arijit was sent to Bhagalpur after his arrest.

According to Patna SSP Manu Maharaaj, police had information that Arijit Shashwat was at Hanuman Mandir near Patna junction after which a police team reached the spot and arrested him.

Arijit, however, told mediapersons that he had surrendered before police in deference to the court order. Arijit said that he had wrongly been accused of evading arrest. He said he was not absconding as he had not committed any crime. If raising slogans in praise of ‘Bharat Mata’ and ‘Sri Ram’ is a crime then I may be called a criminal, he claimed.

Arijit along with 8 others was named in one of the two FIRs lodged with Nathnagar police station,  Bhagalpur, following clashes that broke out on March 17 after some people objected to playing of loud music during a procession allegedly led by him. The procession was allegedly taken out without the permission of Bhagalpur district administration. Several persons including two policemen were injured in the clashes.
