Patna : In a massive upset, World Number 175 in the ATP rankings Thanasi Kokkinakis, 21, Australia, shocked World Number 1 and top seed Roger Federer, 36, Switzerland, in the second round of Miami Open ATP Masters 1000 tournament at Crandon Park Tennis Centre, Key Biscayne, Florida, USA, in three sets 3-6, 6-3, 7-6, on March 24, 2018.

Federer was the defending champion and it was his first match in the tournament. Federer had to reach at least the quarterfinals of the tournament to retain his World Number 1 position but he lost in the second round itself.

World Number 107 Yuki Bhambri, 25, India, too lost his second round match to World Number 11 and 8th seed Jack Sock, 25, USA, 3-6, 6-7. But, World Number 8 and 6th seed Kevin Anderson, 1, South Africa, defeated World Number 89 Nikoloz Basilashvili, 26, Georgia, 6-4, 6-3, to enter the third round of Miami Open. World Number 39 Fernando Verdasco, 34, Spain, the 31st seed, also entrered the third round defeating World Number 69 Guillermo Garcia Lopez, 34,  Spain, 4-6, 6-0, 6-2, in the second round.

World Number 2o and 17th seed Nick Kyrgios, 22, Australia, defeated World Number 108 Dusan Lajovic, 27, Serbia, 6-4, 6-1, to enter the third round.  World Number 14 and 11th seed Sam Querry, 30, USA, defeated World Number 93 Radu Albot, 28, Moldova, 7-6, 6-1, to enter the third round. World Number 19 Pablo Carreno Busta, 26, Spain, defeated World Nmber 85 Denis Istomin, 31, Uzbekistan, 6-1, 6-0, to enter the third round. World Number 18 and 15th seed Fabio Fognini, 30, Italy, also entered the 3rd round defeating World No 211 Nicola Kuhn, 18, Spain, 6-2, 6-4.
